🌸 How to Rebuild Your Confidence After a Hard Year
A difficult year can shake even the strongest woman’s confidence. When life throws curveballs — health, family, business, finances, identity shifts — it can feel like parts of you went missing along the way.
But here’s the beautiful truth:
Your confidence isn’t gone — it’s simply waiting to be rebuilt.
1. A Tough Season Doesn’t Define Your Worth
Hardships don’t mean you’re failing — they mean you’re human.
Your worthiness hasn’t diminished.
You are still capable. You are still strong. You are still deserving.
There is a lesson to be learnt from every hardship, challenge or obstacle. When I was diagnosed with bowel cancer 6 years ago, I didn’t know how I would survive. My children rallied round and reminded me of all the challenges I had overcome in my life, and I realised I was still the same me, I just had a different illness, not a broken leg, this time. When I saw this, I was able to put the same energy into my recovery from cancer that I had put into my recovery from my broken leg years earlier.
2. Look for Evidence of Your Resilience
Confidence grows when you recognise your own bounce-back moments.
Ask yourself:
- What challenges have I overcome before?
- What strengths helped me through?
- Where did I show courage without even noticing?
This evidence becomes the foundation of renewed self-belief. For me, a huge reminder of this is taking up skiing and mastering it in my late 40s. I got up again after every fall, I bounced back after injury, I took on slopes I had never dreamed of. Now, in the difficult times, I use skiing as my bounce-back memory. It gets me through even the toughest times.
3. Borrow Belief Until Yours Returns
Sometimes confidence returns faster when you connect with those who can see your brilliance more clearly than you can.
Coaches, mentors, friends, or community can reflect your strengths back to you when your inner critic is loudest.
When my marriage fell apart after 34 years and I had no confidence in my ability to live life as a single woman, I found my confidence again through my adult children, my close friends, my coach and mentor. I didn’t get it back overnight, but, with their help and belief in me, it came back stronger than ever.
